Governor vetoes bill to end medical co-pays for prison inmates

A measure to end inmate health fees is now caught between two branches of government.Gov. Bruce Rauner this week pushed for changes to House Bill 5104, which aims to eliminate $5 co-pays for dental and medical exams behind bars.The Republican governor wrote in a veto statement Tuesday that the state should just reduce, rather than remove, the payments.“It is important to balance the need to provide medical services with potential abuses of a free medical system that could create significant backlogs in an already …
