David Thomas covers Illinois’ 1st District Appellate Court and the appellate bar as well as other criminal justice issues for the company.
David earned his bachelor degrees in journalism and political science from Northern Illinois University in 2011 and a master’s degree in public affairs reporting at the University of Illinois, Springfield in 2012, where he interned for the (Springfield) State Journal-Register covering the Illinois statehouse.
Prior to joining the Law Bulletin in November 2015, he worked as an associate editor for Inside U.S. Trade, a policy-oriented newsletter based in Arlington, Va., where he covered the inner workings of U.S. and international trade policy.
In 2018, David won the Herman Kogan Media Award for Online Legal Beat Reporting from the Chicago Bar Association for his reporting on the law surrounding secret cell-spying technology the Chicago police have access to.
He married his high school sweetheart, and they have a son named Parker and a dog named Izzy.
