On Dec. 14, 1964, the Supreme Court of the United States decided Heart of Atlanta Motel, Inc. v. United States, an important case in which the court held the government could enjoin private businesses from discriminating on the basis of race under the commerce clause and upheld the Civil Rights Act of 1964 under its first challenge.
