SPRINGFIELD — Opioids have had an effect on Rep. La Shawn K. Ford’s family. As a result, the experience led him to introduce legislation aimed at tackling the drug crisis. The West Side Democrat filed House Bill 3879, which would extend “good Samaritan” protections to people on parole or mandatory supervised release.Under the measure, a person who seeks emergency medical assistance for someone experiencing an overdose receives some limited legal protection from arrest and criminal charges.
